Nursery Furniture

I've started looking at nursery furniture - how in the world does anyone pick? There are so many out there that I like. I think I want black (or a really dark wood), a lifetime or 4-in-1 crib (goes from crib to toddler bed to daybed to full-size bed), and something that is sturdy and going to last through all of those stages. I also want to get a matching dresser and possibly a bookcase. I have only looked online so far since we don't have much for stores in our area - BRU, Bassett Baby, Young America, JC Penney, and Munire Furniture. If you have any recommendations, let me know. This is big purchase so I want to make it wisely! We probably won't order anything until our 20-week ultrasound, but I think it will also depend on how long it takes to get in.

i hear ya, there's so many choices that i usually get overwhelmed and give up. i like the stuff with dark finishes but have noticed on other people's stuff that the finish sort of rubs off and leaves spots that look worn SOOOOO, i'm thinking that a lighter finish and something that is solid wood is the way to go. i am considering the convertible crib too, one person told me that everyone she knows that has them ends up buying different beds anyways, but i think i need to do a little more research on that front, maybe see how some other people liked there's.

We love A's crib by Young America. It's solid wood, very well made and they have SO MANY choices in regards to style and color. Definitely a bed that will grow with your child.

Can't wait to see what you choose...have fun shopping!! :)

With our son we spent a fortune at USA Baby and although I love it, it was so much money! This time we actually purchased it from Walmart because it was the same brand we found out Sears for a fraction of the cost. It's note as nice as our sons, but it's lifetime and we like it. I would shop around and when you find something you like, see if you can find it at a lesser retailer for a fraction of the price. Enjoy!

It's so overwhelming, isn't it? I'm leaning toward lighter wood (kind of a honey oak), but only because we live in an old house with really nice woodwork and I'm picky about the furniture matching the trim in the room. I don't think we'll get a convertible crib - I think they look kind of funny as toddler beds (and I'm still hopeful that this baby will have a sibling some day that will need the crib).

Good luck with your search. Can't wait to see photos!

We haven't bought our crib yet, but we decided on a white finish, and we're getting a 4-in-1 crib as well. I'm hoping to order it in the next month or so, so I can have the nursery all put together for my shower!

We bought a 4 in 1 crib for our son thinking that we would use it in all its stages for our youngest child. One thing we didn't realize was that our son would chew on the top rails while he was up and awake and in his crib. (Many other babies we know did the same thing.) We did end up wrapping sheets around the top rails but the damage was already done. Not sure what this will look like once it is used as a full size bed because I think most of the chewing is on the piece that turns into the foot board. Anyway, food for thought.

Hey Amber! :)
We got the Simplicity Ellis 4 in 1 for both the kids, along with the matching dresser and changing table. I thought it would be great to have them grow into each stage. It has worked out pretty well, but I don't really like the 'toddler stage' that comes with it. You are supposed to have two smaller things that come out on each side to help keep the child in the bed, leaving the center more open. We've ended up taking those side things off totally and buying a bed rail that goes along the middle, since the kids seemed to fall out of the middle of the bed more! :)
We had a little more trouble getting Ellie in a big girl bed at one point, too. I always wondered if it would be easier if we would have been able to make a big deal out of getting some kind of Princess big girl bed or something, rather than it just looking very similar to her crib. I'm not sure.
Hope that helps! Happy shopping!!! :)
